Some of you may notice that there are ads over there in the side bar. Those ads, provided by BlogHer, are what pay for the blog, which lets me keep nattering on in public. Every so often, BlogHer offers up a new way to play with them. This time, I could not resist: I get to review books. Well, to be accurate, I get to review one book. I'm assuming that if they don't like the way I do it, they'll pull the plug.
Now, I totally plan to share my review with you, but this time, I'm just writing about the reviewing process. As tempting as it is to write my review like a serial story -- with daily updates on how I feel about the book as I go along -- I'm not going to do that.
Usually, I pick up a book, and just read. But I figured that if I'm supposed to write a decent review, I should take notes for myself. That, apparently, puts me into editor mode. I found myself distracted by either a typo or a grammar error (apostrophe placement) on like, page 7.
It took a while to trim back that editor view. I'm still trying to take notes, so that I don't forget something I noticed as I was reading that I think is worth including in the review -- but I'm also trying to just go with the flow and read the book. For what it's worth, I've gotten "in" to the story now, and have fewer quibbles, but that may be because finally, my family is letting me just sit and read!
Meanwhile, I'm playing with a group of folks on Ravelry who put up design challenges once a month. The past two have not excited me, but this month, I'm totally in! I'm still swatching, but should be in the GO mode pretty soon. Luckily, this one is a baby garment, so it'll knit up quickly! Can't wait to get this one out to testers!
