You might consider one of the substitutes based on the stevia plant. I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and have found that this works often as a replacement for sugar. My husband used it to make us hot chocolate this winter (our acid test). It was delicious. We've been using truvia. You might give it a try. Better than having to break your no sugar because of another headache. Also the longer I avoid sugar the more often this odd thing happens-I find that things that I used to love are now too sweet. Sometimes sickeningly sweet. Good luck.
